Reigning USATF 5-kilometer road race national champion and American 10-kilometer women's only road race record holder Weini Kelati, a member of the Under Armour Dark Sky Distance team and a 13-time All-American as well as a two-time NCAA Division 1 champion at New Mexico, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to reflect on her performances Nov. 6 in New York in winning her first national title in 15:18, along with Oct. 16 in Boston in prevailing in her first professional road race. Kelati clocked 31:18 to eclipse the women's-only mark at the 10-kilometer distance achieved in 2015 by Molly Huddle. Shalane Flanagan still holds the American 10-kilometer road race record of 30:52 achieved in a mixed competition in 2016 in Boston. Kelati looks forward to competing again Nov. 25 in the 85th Manchester Road Race, the most prestigious Thanksgiving Day road event in the United States, along with fellow 5-kilometer national champion Drew Hunter. She also expresses gratitude for the opportunity to compete against 42-year-old Edna Kiplagat. Kelati examines the significance of capturing the national title along with Hunter, after both athletes also won Foot Locker championships in 2015 representing Virginia schools Loudoun Valley and Heritage. She explains how she is also planning to race cross country at least once in the months ahead and possibly twice. Kelati is targeting a return to San Diego in January for the USATF Cross Country Championships and is considering also participating in the USATF Club Cross Country Championships on Dec. 11 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. That is also the same site as the NCAA Division 1 championship meet Nov. 20, when New Mexico will try to extend its streaks of 11 straight top-10 finishes and seven consecutive top-seven performances at nationals. Kelati revisits her individual victory in 2019 in Terre Haute, Ind., along with New Mexico's last team title in 2017 in Louisville, Ky. She analyzes how Lobos coach Joe Franklin is capable of peaking his student-athletes so well for the postseason, evidenced by New Mexico sweeping the top seven spots Oct. 29 at the Mountain West Conference Championships to extend the team streak to 14 consecutive titles, in addition to winning Nov. 12 at the Mountain Regional meet in Provo, Utah. Kelati also speaks about gaining her American citizenship in June and racing at the Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meters, and how that has given her more motivation to qualify to represent the U.S. to compete in 2022 at the World Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., where she first raced in America representing Eritrea at the 2014 World Under-20 Championships.
